The Bowen Technique

Benefits of treatment

Bowen Therapy Back treatment

The Bowen Technique is a non-invasive, gentle, hands-on remedial therapy which can be administered through light clothing, with the client sitting, standing or lying.

Bowen Technique is one of the most versatile and effective therapeutic treatments available today. Bowen is a highly effective treatment for a wide range of conditions.

Releasing stress at a very deep level, it stimulates the body to realign, addressing imbalances in functions and chemical composition,  The moves also relieve pain, release energy, reduce tension, increase blood supply, improve lymphatic drainage, release toxins, and so much more.

In contrast to many other hands-on therapies, Bowen does not attempt to force the body to change; rather it asks the body to recognise and make the changes necessary to bring it back to homoeostasis (physiological equilibrium).

Bowen can help with a wide range of symptoms, physical and emotional, and is suitable for all ages, from new-born babies with colic to the elderly, and there are no known contra-indications.

Its ability to re-align and balance the body means it is effective for most conditions. A treatment consists of a series of gentle moves on skin or through light clothing, with the client usually lying on a bed or treatment couch, although it is possible to be treated seated.

This remarkable technique can be quick and effective in helping the following:

  • Muscular and skeletal problems in neck, shoulder, hip, knees, ankle and back, including sciatica
  • Headaches / Migraine
  • Frozen shoulder, tennis and golf elbow, R.S.I. and carpal tunnel
  • Whiplash and sports injuries
  • Bell's Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease and the difficulties suffered by stroke victims
  • Respiratory, bronchial and related symptoms such as hayfever and asthma
  • Digestive problems such as IBS
  • Arthritis / Rheumatism
  • Pain management
  • Problems with posture and body alignment
  • Hormonal, pregnancy and fertility problems
  • Tension / Anxiety / Stress, ME, fatigue and sleep problems
  • Jaw discomfort.

The Treatment

Using thumbs and fingers on precise points of your body, small rolling-type moves  are made which stimulates muscles and soft tissue.  These moves can be performed either on skin or through light clothing. There is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue and no force is used.  The experience of a treatment is gentle, subtle and relaxing. Between each set of moves, your body is allowed to rest for a few minutes to allow it to absorb the information it has received.

Each session lasts between 45-60 minutes, depending on the age of the client and the nature of their condition. Many clients become so relaxed they fall asleep during the treatment. It is believed that the Bowen Technique prompts your body to reset, repair and balance itself.  Clients report they experience pain relief, improvement of function and recovery of energy.

Short-term (acute) injury may be resolved in one to three Bowen treatments, while long- standing (chronic) conditions may require longer.  A gap of five to ten days is recommended between Bowen sessions, so that the body can process the subtle information it has been given. It is advised that clients do not have other hands-on therapies while receiving Bowen.
